looking around
    to ensure no one sees
    the old man skipping

    rainwater gurgles
    through the downspout
    below, the river roars

    they danced all night
the band packed up and gone
    two hours ago

    barefoot boy
    a hawk circles high above
    the long dusty road

    summer heat —
    finches take turns
    in the sprinkler

    last summer’s garden
    a faded scarecrow guards
    patches of snow

    ten thousand poets
    have viewed ten thousand moons
    this moon, just one

    winter wind
    a faded kite flutters
    on the power line
